This composition by Ballaké is a creative reflection on the powerful memories he holds of his father, Djelimady no 1. It reflects the power of music to recall the past. The title Weltere means “joy” in Halpulaar the language of the Fula (Peul) people who are a major ethnicity in Mali and whose musical traditions have been a large influence in Mande music. It is Ballaké’s way of celebrating Mali’s ethnic and musical diversity, which has influenced his own way of playing kora.
